European Computer Driving License

(ICDL Outside Europe)

The ECDL concept originated in Finland in 1988 and has spread throughout Europe since then. The European Computer Driving Licence Foundation, which is the international governing body, has its headquarters in Dublin.

The European Computer Driving Licence is a means of indicating that you have required the basicc skills to use a computer in a wide variety of applications, just as your standard driving licence indicates that you have required the skills necessary to drive a car on public roads.

ECDL -approved, computer based tests are used by ECDL approved test centres to assess candidates. Candidates are required to pass seven assessments within three years of their first successful tests. On completion of all seven tests, the Skills Card is returned to the national ECDL office, which then issues the ECDL certificate.

The issue of the certificate - the European Computed Driving Licence is administered in Ireland by ECDL Ireland/ICS Skills, which controls accreditation and provides testor training on a national level. It also closly monitors the standards under which ECDL/ICDL training and texting are carried out at the hundres of accredited training centres in the country
